Pathways to Space
Redesigning History, Inspiring the Future
How do we get to space?
At the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force™, that question is about to take center stage.
Pathways to Space is a proposed transformation of the Museum’s Missile Gallery into an immersive experience exploring the technologies, partnerships, and people behind America’s journey beyond Earth. Drawing on the Museum’s unparalleled collection, the exhibit will connect the development of early missile systems to the rockets that carried astronauts and scientific discovery into orbit.
A Story That Can Only Be Told Here
The origins of America’s space program are deeply rooted in the work of the U.S. Air Force and its collaboration with industry and academic partners. The same innovations developed for national defense helped make space exploration possible.
Pathways to Space will bring this story into focus, highlighting:
- The evolution of land-based strategic missile systems
- The science and engineering behind rocket propulsion
- The Airmen who operated, maintained, and supported these systems
- The partnership between the Department of the Air Force and NASA
Together, these elements reveal a powerful throughline from Cold War technology to modern space exploration.
An Immersive, Interactive Experience
The redesigned gallery will go beyond traditional displays, incorporating interactive exhibits and dynamic storytelling to engage visitors of all ages.
Planned features include:
- Hands-on experiences that demonstrate the physics and chemistry of rocket propulsion
- Interactive displays connecting scientific principles to real-world applications
- Educational programming centered on STEAM disciplines
The goal is simple: create an environment that both honors past achievements and inspires future innovation.
Pathways to Space is designed not only to showcase history, but to spark curiosity. By connecting foundational scientific concepts to real-world achievements, the exhibit will encourage visitors to explore careers in aerospace and related fields.
It is an investment in the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators—those who will write the next chapter of exploration.
Your Role in Making It Possible
Bringing this vision to life will require significant philanthropic support.
The Air Force Museum Foundation is proud to partner with the Museum to help realize Pathways to Space. Through the generosity of donors, this ambitious transformation can become a world-class experience that educates, engages, and inspires visitors from around the globe.
Pathways to Space represents the next step in the Museum’s mission to preserve history while looking toward the future.
More details about this initiative—and how you can be part of it—will be shared soon.
